The disease readily spreads horizontally, but vertical transmission appears to be the most important means of dissemination. ![]() ![]() The disease is characterized by atrophy of the bone marrow hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues (e.g., thymus) in young chickens, causing severe anemia and immunosuppression leading to increased mortality due to secondary complications. Chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) is an economically important pathogen affecting the poultry industry worldwide it was first isolated in Japan in 1979 by Yuasa.
